We all support each other. I know that some of you have low opinions of Jalop comment dwellers, but I don’t. I’ve met up with lots of people from Jalopnik (no easy feat) and they have all been great. I like that we all try to help and support each other and seem to genuinely care about each others wellbeing.
I recently had a text from a Jalop that I met in person a few months ago. He texted me because he saw a Fiesta ST just like mine that had rolled over near where I live and wanted to make sure I was OK. I assured him that I was ok and it wasn’t my car.
Nice to have someone think of you though. I hope that Oppo and Jalopnik never change.

When we see the same names and talk with the same people each day getting to know not just each others vehicles but bereavements and health issues whatever they may be, it’s hard not to get a little attached.
So when we hear a member of the OPPO family is under something, we tend to rally round.

Oppo is awesome. Jellopicnic is still good too, especially compared to the internet in general. The sheer volume of people they have attracted in the last couple years means there will be a share of trolls trying to stomp on people.

Oppo and Jalopnik from before the the whole massive migration away was great. I started on Oppo about 4 years ago and Jalopnik about 9 years ago (holy cow, didn’t realize how long it’s been). I remember seeing the “Pretty sure that’s a Lambo, Bro” story as it was happening. I think we reached the peak when everyone was posting memes in the comments. Those were hilarious times.
Those of us who have stayed and joined Oppo since have all been solid. Oppo is pretty ace since we all are civil even though we all like different cars. And we also offer that sense of community for personal happenings too like Svend said. I can’t find any other community like it.

I was just thinking about this- I see and talk with people everyday, and I know less about what is happening in their lives than a random stranger living all the way across the country whose name I don’t even know and whose face I have never even seen. This is internet thing does have some upsides.

That’s why we’re here. We kick ‘em where it hurts, send them out in boxes, and shut the door.

The thing with Oppo is, there used to be so much more quality content. So much more posts/articles that contained a bit of thought, a bit of emotion, a bit of depth.
I remember, this is quite an old post, of someone posting an explanation of how we (car enthusiasts) are seen by making a comparison to a washing machine. I know it sounds far fetched, but the article made a lot of sense and you could see that the author put a lot of thought to it.
I am in no way dismissing the shit posts, the ‘I need to rant/vent’ posts and/or the ‘heres a pic of my car for the upteenth time this week’ posts, but it seems like lately, thats all there is.
Makes me a bit sad tbh.
As far as the FP goes, I still visit it from time to time and comment when I have something on my mind, but other than that, I stay off of it.

Yeah. I get that this place is an “off topic” community, but here and there we’ve had people who seem to think “oh, it’s been 10 minutes since I’ve posted something, so let me barf up some nonsense.”

I dunno, I hardly recognize most of the names I see commenting on Jalopnik anymore. I suppose some of them are on burner #6 or so, but the rest are the usual whiny “why won’t those mean old car companies make cars only three people want and I won’t buy anyway?l

I think what stopped a lot of that in-depth quality content, was when we lost the chance to get it shared on the FP. It’s hard for me to find the motivation to write something long and in depth, when maybe 12 people will read it and it’ll get two comments, if I post when Oppo is slow.

I think its amazing when you ask the most random questions and OPPO has the answer.

At this point my grave marker is going to have a plate of chicken parm chiseled onto it.

I feel like a lot of the people that were producing quality too have gone to other platforms or have gone into actual writing. Even I have started putting my quality stuff elsewhere in the form of articles on RightFootDown.
